2010 Downtown Farmers Market

Welcome to the 22nd season of the Davison Farmer’s Market!

What an exciting time of year!  I am happy to announce that I will be your Market Master once again.  I truly look forward to another great season!

I am looking for vendors to sell home-grown and home-produced items, such as farm-fresh local produce, craft items, garden plants, organic fruits and veggies, bakery goods and much, much more!

The Davison Farmer’s Market is scheduled every Friday from 9:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m., beginning July 9 through September 17.  The market will be located in the parking lot at the base of East Second Street, just two blocks east of M-15 in Downtown Davison.  You will need to provide your own coverings, tables and chairs.  The cost for one space at the market will be $20.00 daily or $85.00 for the season.

As in the past, a theme will be set each week and local musical acts will entertain at each week’s market.  The weekly Vendor’s Market Basket drawing is a HUGE success!  Vendors will be asked again every week to contribute towards the Gift Basket Drawing.  The Farmer’s Market Rules, an Agreement of Compliance Form, and a Reservation Form are available here.  If you require forms to be sent to you, please contact me.  The Reservation Form and Agreement of Compliance Form, along with your check, need to be completed and returned to the City of Davison offices for you to be eligible to sell at the market.  Please have your reservation in our office by June 30th if you desire a seasonal rate.

If you have any questions regarding the Farmer’s Market, please feel free to contact me by phone at 810.214.1034 or 810.653.2191, or by email at davisonmarket@yahoo.com.  I look forward to seeing you in the 2010 Market Season!

Sincerely,
Leigh K. Gauthier

Community Survey Results

The community survey, conducted by Oakland University on behalf of the City, Davison Township, and the Davison Community School District, results can be reviewed here. Thank you to all who participated and completed and returned the surveys. In general, the respondents indicated a very high level of satisfaction with the area. I hope to conduct another survey in three-five years in order to see if things continue to be satisfactory.

Parcel for the Park

Mr. Bob Callis, with the assistance of his family and others, will host his signature fundraising event for "A Parcel for the Park" on May 1, 2010. This event offers a 5k run, a 5k walk, and a half-mile trot for children. Last year's inaugural event was a remarkable success, bringing so many exceptional people from this community and elsewhere together for the first time. Some wonderful memories were created and additional funds were raised as approximately 400 participants followed the trails in the Abernathy Regional Park as runners or walkers. As a show of support for Mr. Callis' efforts, the City Council provided some logistic support by manning the water tables on the route. This year's event should attract an even larger and more enthusiastic crowd. Registration information can be found here.

Thank you, Mr. Callis, to you and your family, for your continuing efforts to enhance your community.

Community Videos

With the assistance of the National League of Cities, the City has developed several community-related videos which are now posted at the bottom of the City's web site home page. The videos are entitled Welcome, Quality of Life, Real Estate and Relocation, Education, Chamber of Commerce, and Water System. Many local businesses have provided support with web-based links to their own web sites or videos. These videos will make it easier to promote the community and the wonderful assets of the area. Please take the opportunity to view the videos (each is only a minute long) and share them with others via email.

2009 PumpkinFest

The weather was excellent and the town crowded on October 9-10 as the City's annual PumpkinFest took over the streets of downtown. With parades, pumpkins, and pageantry, the event had something for everyone. For a photo review of some weekend highlights, click here.

Downtown Developments

The City of Davison was recently awarded a Facade Improvement grant from the Michigan State Housing Development Authority. The grant, similar to a grant received last year, is in the amount of $25,000 and is to be used for the removal of canopies in front of businesses in downtown Davison. The City will work closely with downtown property and business owners to ensure that this grant is another success story for downtown and the community in general.

While the City has not received any official paperwork outlining the specific terms of the grant, you can read the announcement letter and press release here.

Additionally, earlier this summer, the City was also designated as an Associate Main Street program (read the announcement). This program, a precursor to selection as a full-blown Main Street community, will offer training to representatives of the City and local businesses and other interested volunteers. The Main Street designation is coveted by communities throughout the State (as well as nationwide). The training opportunities will provide needed guidance and assistance on tools to improve downtown in a variety of ways: appearance, business, and promotion. If you are interested in serving as a Main Street volunteer, please contact a Downtown Development Authority member or City Hall.

The Community Development Department should be congratulated for its efforts to enhance downtown Davison. Keep up the good work!
